This report is Confirmed true and is of High Priority. Here is why -
The incident happened on the night of Thursday, 4 June 2020 at 1:00 AM when thieves who, according to local sources, are members of the host community broke into the house of a refugee in Eden 1 cluster. After the owner of the house realized the action he tried to intercept the thieves but they noticed the move and escaped. He then raised an alarm for help and one of the suspects was later apprehended with help of some youths from the nearby village (Eden 6). They brutally murdered the thief and dumped his body in a nearby swamp, according to information from the zonal chairperson. The following day, the police visited the crime scene, investigated, and arrested the owner of the house and some of the perpetrators. The victims were taken to Madi-Okollo District Police Station. The murder of the suspect led host community to become furious with the refugees and threaten to retaliate. Due to the tensions, some refugees from Eden escaped and could not stay and sleep at their respective homes for fear of being burned inside their houses. Some members from the host community reacted by burning to the ground buildings belonging to suspected murderers. These acts and others threats created more fear for the refugees. In an attempt to calm the situation, the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) responded by deploying police on the ground. This move helped to normalize the situation by discouraging the angry host members who had already started robbing the properties of some refugees. According to the zonal chairperson, refugees have been reporting frequent thefts with both public and private properties, such as solar lamps installed by humanitarian organizations, being stolen. Such routine incidents could have brought anger into the hearts of some refugees, thus making such an incident more likely. This incident has widened the gap between the refugees and the host communities but the situation has been brought under control for now.
